Digital SLR Video & Filming for Dummies Review

Posted on Sep 6 2013 - 10:31pm by Susan Bewley

As some of you may have figured out, I love taking pictures. It is one of the reasons I chose to purchase my current iPhone. The camera produces wonderful looking pictures that even some stand alone cameras can't reproduce. While some of this is done using special lenses and special applications, I still think it's quite impressive. Unfortunately, my iPhone camera isn't perfect and can't capture everything I want, leading to us looking at DSLR cameras. The problem is that I'm overwhelmed with all the features, leading me to look at different photography books to determine what I need and want to do. One of the things that amazed me is that some of these cameras can even record near-movie quality videos, something that I think is quite impressive! Wanting to learn more, I was excited when I found out that I was chosen to review one of the newest Dummies books – Digital SLR Video & Filming for Dummies. As soon as my free book came in the mail, I was excited to get reading!

Digital SLR Video & Filming for Dummies: What is It

With DSLR cameras becoming more popular, many people are considering not only replacing their old camera, but their camcorder as well. In the past, these combinations were not that great, but with now, with all the new photography technology, many DSLRs are far superior to most cameras and camcorders on the market. While this may sound awesome to consumers, it also means that you have a very expensive camera with more power than most of us know what to do with. Now you can do more than just take family videos, you can create family masterpieces that the kids will enjoy watching a decade later, allowing you to take in all the details from the experience. With Digital SLR Video & Filming for Dummies, you can learn how to do all of this and more, teaching you everything you need to take high quality videos and movies.  With the in-depth tutorials, you can even make music videos starring your own kids!

Digital SLR Video & Filming for Dummies:  Quality & Usability

Having purchased some For Dummies book in the past, I wasn't for sure what to expect. I have some books that were worth every penny, and others that were quickly exchanged at Half Price Books in hopes of getting something better. While these books are normally quality, there are a few duds. I am happy to say that Digital SLR Video & Filming for Dummies is not one of them. From the moment I opened this book, I was amazed with the quality of the pages. Everything is designed to make each page stand out and last since it's expected to be one of those reference books you are going to use often. Even the layout of the book is user friendly, allowing you to find just about anything you want to know with a quick skim. If you want to make videos and films with your digital camera, you can easily do it using this book as a guide.

As for the writing and instruction itself, the book is very impressive! The author, John Carucci, really outdid himself with this book. His directions are clear, precise, and easy for anyone to understand. While some of the tips were over my head as a beginner, I was able to understand what was going on fairly quickly, allowing me to feel confident I could take amazing videos with the assistance of this book. I would just recommend reading the book in pieces since there is just so much information to absorb!

Digital SLR Video & Filming for Dummies: Overall

As someone who is considering purchasing a DSLR camera for blogging, I have to say that I was very impressed with this book. Looking through all the features and instructions, I can only imagine the amazing videos I could take for the blog. As someone who loves to vlog when I get the opportunity, this book really seems like it will be gold when I DO get my camera. Now I just have to figure the best camera to purchase for doing everything talked about in this book! Based on my own experience, I can happily give Digital SLR Video & Filming for Dummies an A+ rating!

My daughter loves cameras and has a DSLR, but it doesn't do video.  We have thought about getting one that would but wasn't sure what to look for or how it works.  Sounds like we should check out this book.  Thanks.

I would be interested in this for the video aspect of it. I have noticed a lot of small projects on the web that have shot with DSLR cameras and they look amazing.
