Green Cleaner Review: Method Anti-Bacterial Kitchen Cleaner

May 30, 2012 by Susan Bewley

I have for years been using Method's home cleaning products to clean my house. One of the only problems I had with Method, however, was the fact that they weren't antibacterial.  I really wanted to clean my kitchen counters and our bearded dragons' tanks with a natural cleaner, but I couldn't do this normally without convincing my husband that it was actually killing germs – especially with both areas having a salmonella risk.  For this reason, I was very excited when I saw that the Method brand now offered a new Anti-Bacterial Kitchen Cleaner .

Method Anti-Bacterial Kitchen Cleaner

For about a year now I have been using the Method Anti-Bacterial Kitchen Cleaner .  This cleaner claims to kill 99.9% of household germs and bacteria without being hard on non-porous surfaces.  When I purchased our cleaner, it was only available in the lemon verbena scent, but now you have a choice between this and the orange zest scent.  Like most Method products, this cleaner is 100% biodegradable and is safe for children and pets alike, making it one of the few natural cleaners that is safe to use to clean up nasty reptile messes at our home.

Method Anti-Bacterial Kitchen Cleaner: Effectiveness

One of the biggest issues we have with our studio apartment is the fact that we have a very small kitchen.  I have about a 3-foot-long area that isn't filled with kitchen appliances or a sink to work, making it very important that I have a cleaner that works.  With me cooking at home all the time, this small area usually has raw chicken, flour, and other ingredients accidently finding themselves on the counter, making it a wonderful breeding place for bacteria.  While a bleach cleaner may be effective, I don't feel comfortable having these chemicals in my food, since they are rather toxic.

I have been a fan of the Method brand since the first product I tried from them, so I was certainly willing to give this product a chance.  I haven't been disappointed by this cleaner, either – it leaves my counters absolutely sparkling and does a great job cleaning up just about any type of mess.  I have spilled red Crystal Light, spaghetti sauce, and just about anything you can imagine on this counter, and this cleaner cleans it up without staining.

Since the Method Anti-Bacterial Kitchen Cleaner is one of the few natural cleaners that also cleans bacteria, I also feel more comfortable actually working on my counter. As well, I also use this cleaner to clean all of our bearded dragon tanks. It leaves the tanks looking sparkling clean and does a great job neutralizing any unpleasant scents without exposing our pets to toxic chemicals.

Method Anti-Bacterial Kitchen Cleaner: Scent

While I love the smell of most Method products, I will be completely honest with you. This stuff doesn't smell amazing. It's not terrible, but it does not smell like lemon verbena.  From the moment you spray this cleaner, there is only one thing you smell – thyme.  There are definitely worse smells in the world, but I would be much happier if it smelled like grapefruit or just about any other scent.  I have not had a chance to try the new orange zest smell, so I cannot comment on this compared to the lemon verbena yet.

The one thing I will say about the Method Anti-Bacterial Kitchen Cleaner is that this Method home cleaner does a wonderful job neutralizing other smells. As I said before, I love our bearded dragons to death, but when they use the bathroom, it can very quickly clear a room.  This is the only natural cleaner I have found that can actually kill the odor from one of their tanks and is non-toxic.  Since the smell doesn't bother our beardies, I definitely consider the thyme scent worth putting up with.

Method Anti-Bacterial Kitchen Cleaner: Price

If there is one thing that the Method brand is known for, it is offering inexpensive, green products to the public. This Method Anti-Bacterial Kitchen Cleaner is very inexpensive, falling in the $4 range at most retailers.  At Amazon, you can usually find this cleaner for $3.10 or less, making it the same price as most non-natural cleaners.

Method Anti-Bacterial Kitchen Cleaner: Overall

While I really want to give the Method Anti-Bacterial Kitchen Cleaner an amazing score, I would have to give a B due to the strong thyme scent.  It is likely the most effective natural cleaner I have seen to this day, but the smell is something that could definitely be improved.  If you are looking for a green product that does a great job cleaning and neutralizing other smells, however, I think the smell is something that can definitely be tolerated. At least it is better than smelling bleach or ammonia!

Just point out that aantibacterial soap does nothing special besides being really good at producing super resistant germs. Regular soap and cleaners kill the same amount of germs as anti bacterial cleaners minus the super bug side effect

I’m always careful but I believe strongly in using antibacterial cleaners when you work with animals. We have reptiles so its always best to be as clean as possible when you are dealing with the potential for samonella.

Had to share my cute order from @sugoimart - Box 2 Had to share my cute order from @sugoimart - Box 2 of 2 included 2 Sakura Lucky Bags (all Japan-exclusive items). These bags were 100% worth it & oh so adorable! When this box arrived from #sugoimart it was under pressure from all the items in these two bags. It includes some cute sakura season #Sanrio items #dogplush , tea, soda, beauty items, stationery & more. While there were some duplicate items, not as many as the #SanroiLuckyBag . If you are considering buying this bag - go for it! While I wish the second bag had a plush rather than a #sakura themed toy, I definitely think it was the gamble! #LuckyBag #Sakuraluckybag #Japan #Japanexclusive #HelloKitty #Cute
