If there is one thing every Southerner loves, it is pecan pie! I don’t know what this dessert is about, but it seems to be one of those things that brings us all together. Even if politics and other things get us down, it seems to be one of those things that everyone agrees is just good. I think it is also one of those things that may be just an acquired taste. My mom wasn’t a huge fan of it, but she was also a New Yorker. Most of the rest of my family, though, loves this pie and all of its different iterations. While I love this traditional dessert, it is one of the few southern desserts I have never prepared.
I didn’t consider it until a family member asked for a recipe. I was honestly clueless since I didn’t even know my mother had one. While I eventually did find it digging through my mom’s box of old recipes, it had me thinking there had to be a faster way to make this, even though those who don’t love this ultra-sweet dessert might like it, too. I can’t disagree, though. While I love pecan pie, it is one of those things I must be in the mood for because it is so sweet. Most of the time, it is honestly too sweet for me and not exactly diet-friendly (not to mention that most traditional recipes are filled with various corn syrups, which I don’t look to use in cooking).
After experimenting with various recipes, I finally found what I thought was the perfect pecan pie recipe—turning it into a pecan pie-inspired cobbler. This delicious cobbler has all the pecan pie flavor without the oversweetness and corn syrup. It uses only natural ingredients you can find in your own pantry, which is very important to my own family (especially since we try to focus on eating as naturally and organically as possible). I also love that it is inexpensive, especially with pecans being on sale lately. It also helps me regularly get a large bag of pecans on Amazon or Sam’s Club. It is also a great recipe for re-seasoning older cast iron pans.
