Do you love a good biscuits and gravy casserole? Growing up, it was one of the quick recipes my mom used to make when she was too tired to cook. Usually, she did it with Bisquick, but sometimes with frozen or refrigerator roll biscuits. All of us kids thought it was terrific, and Mom loved that it was swift and easy. I hadn’t thought about it in years until a family member brought it up and asked for the recipe. Honestly, I think she just did what was on the side of the box, but I wondered if there was a way to make her biscuits and gravy casserole recipe even better.
After reviewing some of my mom’s recipes and doing some research online, I have finally created what I think is the closest thing to my mom’s classic recipe, but with better ingredients. While I would love to make it with homemade biscuits (which is entirely doable), I was focused on just trying to recreate the closest thing to what she made in my childhood. Not only is this a fast and easy-to-make recipe, but it is also full of flavor without being too spicy for children. Again, since I was trying to copy mom’s recipe, I tried making it very kid-friendly, so if you are making it for adults, don’t be afraid to add more seasoning. My husband personally thought it was best to add spicy red pepper flakes.
While this is a quick recipe, I love that it is made with natural ingredients. I prefer getting organic buttermilk canned biscuits, but again, you can make your own and use those. Since it also only takes ten minutes of prep time, it is one of those things you can very quickly throw in the oven and have ready in less than an hour, allowing you to have a hot, warm, natural breakfast on the table in almost no time! No one will know this biscuits and gravy casserole is a quick and easy recipe.

This is a delicious and easy biscuits and gravy casserole recipe that uses natural ingredients and can be made with organic canned biscuits (or homemade biscuits).
- Prep Time: 15 minutes
- Cook Time: 40 minutes
- Total Time: 55 minutes
Ingredients
- 1 pound mild ground sausage
- 1/2 cup sweet onion, diced
- 4 tablespoons unsalted butter
- 1 teaspoon salt, divided
- 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
- 1/4 cup all-purpose flour
- 3 1/2 cups whole milk, divided
- 2 cups shredded Mexican-style cheese, divided
- 6 large eggs
- 12 large buttermilk canned biscuits
Instructions
- Preheat the oven to 350 degrees Fahrenheit.
- Add the sausage and diced onion to a large skillet and cook on the stovetop over medium-high heat until the onion is soft and the sausage is mostly cooked through.
- Add the butter to the skillet and stir until the butter is fully melted and the sausage is no longer pink.
- Add the flour to the skillet and stir it into the meat.
- Add three cups of milk, ½ teaspoon salt, and the black pepper to the skillet and cook until the gravy is thickened, stirring constantly to prevent lumps.
- Remove the skillet from the heat and set aside.
- Crack the eggs into a mixing bowl and add the remaining ½ cup of milk, 1 cup of cheese, and the remaining ½ teaspoon salt. Whisk to combine and set aside.
- Spray a 9×13-inch baking dish with non-stick cooking spray and arrange the biscuits evenly in the bottom of the dish.
- Pour the egg mixture over the biscuits, lifting each biscuit slightly so the egg mixture can run underneath.
- Drizzle the sausage gravy evenly over the biscuits.
- Sprinkle the remaining cup of cheese evenly over the top.
- Bake the casserole in the preheated oven for 40-45 minutes or until the eggs and biscuits are fully cooked through.
- Serve hot, and store any leftovers covered in the refrigerator for up to two days.
Note: If you are looking for a 9″x13″ casserole dish, I highly recommend this one from Pyrex. It isn’t expensive and the one I have from them has lasted me for years. I also love that it has a top for easy storage.
