Do you love a good apple pie? For my family, nothing says the end of summer or the start of autumn like apple season. Growing up, apple orchards were two of the largest food-producing farms in the area. The community had huge apple festivals to celebrate the harvest and multiple apple competitions for the best community recipes. Even local restaurants took part. Many of these festivals still exist today, but to us, the best part is going out and picking apples. I have been eagerly awaiting the season, with some varieties of apples already starting to be available in the Kentucky area.
While none of the orchards in my local area have started the harvesting season, some of the stores and farmers’ markets have already started selling apples. This has led me to watch sales and try to prepare a meal plan with the various fresh fruits, including some of the early apples. Most of the varieties available now are only suitable for baking, making them perfect for making a delicious apple pie or apple cobbler. After buying some lovely apples on sale this week, I couldn’t decide if I wanted to make apple pie or apple cobbler, which led to my current revelation – why not combine them!
When I first had the idea, I will admit, I thought I was a bit crazy. After some consideration, though, I realized that both are very similar. The main difference is using a pie crust or having a crisp topping. After experimenting with some recipes, I finally devised a yummy, easy-to-make recipe that uses everything found in just about anyone’s kitchen. Best of all, the entire recipe, from start to finish, is done in less than an hour, making an excellent treat for last-minute entertaining too! I also love that it isn’t overly sweet, bringing out the natural flavor of the apples.

If you are unsure what apples to use, here are our recommendations. We prefer tarter apples such as Envy or Jazz apples, but Granny Smith apples also work just fine.
