Ingredients

Units Scale
  • 6 tablespoons unsalted butter, divided
  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 cup white granulated sugar
  • 2 teaspoons baking powder
  • 2 teaspoons cinnamon, divided
  • 1/2 cup milk
  • 4 medium apples (peeled, cored, and sliced)
  • 1/2 cup light brown sugar, divided
  • 1/2 teaspoon nutmeg
  • 1 cup water, divided

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 350 degrees Fahrenheit.
  2. Add the sliced apples, nutmeg, ¼ cup brown sugar, 1 teaspoon cinnamon, and ½ cup water to a small saucepan. Place the saucepan on the stovetop over medium heat and cook for about 10 minutes or until the apples are softened slightly, stirring frequently. Remove the saucepan from the heat and set aside.
  3. Add two tablespoons of butter to a 10-inch cast iron skillet and place it in the oven to melt the butter while you prepare the cobbler batter.
  4. Add the flour, baking powder, white sugar, milk, and remaining teaspoon of cinnamon to a large mixing bowl. Melt the remaining 4 tablespoons of butter in the microwave for about 30 seconds and add it to the mixing bowl. Whisk until well combined and smooth.
  5. Remove the skillet from the oven and swirl it around until the butter fully coats the bottom. Pour the batter into the skillet and spread it out evenly with a rubber spatula.
  6. Pour the cooked apple mixture over the batter and spread it out evenly.
  7. Sprinkle the remaining ¼ cup brown sugar over the top of the apples.
  8. Pour the remaining ½ cup of water over the entire cobbler.
  9. Bake the cobbler in the preheated oven for 35 minutes or until golden brown and fully cooked through.
  10. Serve warm with ice cream or whipped cream. Store any leftovers in a covered container for up to three days.
