Do you love a good sweet potato casserole? When it comes to family gatherings, some traditional side dishes are simply expected and enjoyed by everyone. In most families, it’s a good sweet potato dish. While some prefer mashed sweet potatoes or a candied sweet potato recipe with marshmallows, one of my personal favorites has always been a nice, slightly sweet potato casserole. As someone who doesn’t really live in the South (some parts of Kentucky may be considered that), I had never tried a sweet potato casserole until I experienced it at a restaurant. Although it was a mom-and-pop establishment, they emphasized that it was similar to Ruth Chris’s, which I found quite intriguing.
After trying various sweet potato recipes at restaurants, I wanted to see if I could create a delicious casserole using one of my family’s favorite vegetables. It took some time (okay, a lot of trial and error), but we eventually developed a recipe that nearly everyone said tasted similar to what they had recently at Ruth Chris. Best of all, it is incredibly easy to make and very inexpensive, making it an excellent dish for holidays or to refresh your regular meal planning routine. If your family loves sweet potatoes, we are sure they will quickly fall in love with this sweet potato casserole.
If you want to try making it a little healthier, you can use milk instead of half and half. Just keep in mind that skim milk can make it a bit watery if you’re not careful. I also personally like to add a little more cinnamon when I’m making it for adults, which gives it more of a bite and enhances some of the potatoes’ natural sweetness. I’ve found that many kids prefer just a bit of sugar to make these potatoes taste a little more dessert-like.

Notes
I prefer to bake my sweet potatoes in the oven. With a fork, poke a few holes in each one, wrap them in aluminum foil, and bake them at 375 degrees Fahrenheit for about an hour. Once cooled slightly, remove the skins and use the sweet potatoes as desired!
