Do I Need a Portable Air Conditioner?

May 27, 2022 by Susan Bewley

Are you considering getting a portable air conditioner for your home or apartment? With summer being right around the corner, many of us feel the heat as we move from spring temperatures into the 80s or above. In older homes or places with scorching summers, this can very quickly start feeling miserable when you have high heat, leaving everyone feeling sweaty and miserable. I will be the first one to admit that while I love gardening and nature, I do not enjoy summer. Once it starts getting above 75 degrees, I turn into a hermit in the house and don’t want to go outside. Ivi and Rylie aren’t much better, with their thick double coats.

Since we have an older, open floor plan home, we have found quite a few hot spots throughout our house. Some areas are comfortable, others feel far too warm and miserable, especially the upstairs of our home. When our household system and furnace needed replacing, we were hopeful that this would fix a lot of our issues. However, to our surprise, we were told by our repair people we would likely still need portable air conditioner units. They were what they recommended for hot spots, rather than turning down the temperature in our entire home. Luckily, we have known about and been using portable A/C units for years, and we were pretty excited this year to try out one of Honeywell’s newest models – Honeywell MN4CFSWW9 Classic Portable Air Conditioner!

When to Use a Portable Air Conditioner Unit

If you are anything like we used to be, you are probably wondering why you would need to use a portable A/C unit, especially if you have a central air system. When we first got our home, we thought this was only something to consider if you didn’t want an ugly window unit in your home. Not only do window units look rather ugly from the outside, but they are also very loud and make it impossible to use that window. Thankfully, a portable A/C unit is a better option.

Some of the reasons to use a portable A/C Unit:

  • Restrictions

As surprising as it may sound, some apartment complexes and HOAs don’t allow window A/C units. Portable A/C units still look nice and don’t go against these restrictions. Unlike window units, they don’t protrude from the building, and can easily be removed when they aren’t needed.

  • Offices & Gaming Rooms

One of the most significant issues gamers and those with a home office have are heat. In many cases, offices are put in areas of the home that are small and not very well ventilated. This means that areas can get stiflingly hot very fast. With a portable A/C unit, you can very quickly cool off a room when it is needed and take it out after work. This not only leaves you feeling better during the workday but is better for your computer hardware.

  • On the Go Cooling

Do you travel in an RV or camper? Portable A/C units are a compact way to cool an area fast and easy to install or uninstall. It can quickly make your recreational vehicle feel better without costing you a fortune.

  • Dehumidifying

One of the first things about living in the south is, well…allergies. If you suffer from allergies, you know that humidity can make things feel worse. To many people’s surprise, portable air conditioners, like the Honeywell MN4CFSWW9 Classic Portable Air Conditioner, are a portable A/C and dehumidifier in one. This means you can get rid of extra humidity in your home and feel better too!

  • Economical

Did you know a portable A/C unit can also supplement and help your HVAC system? While central air is amazing, it can be costly to run – especially if you are trying to fight the heat in a single area of your home. Rather than overcool your entire home, you can use a portable A/C unit to cool off hot spots or popular areas in your home. This can be a major lifesaver for your electric bill during heat waves!

Why We Use Portable Air Conditioner Units

In our household, there are two rooms where we regularly have heat issues – our huge living room and the office. While I love having an open floor plan house, it is sometimes a challenge in winter and summer. Part of the issue is that we have almost no interior doors downstairs, and a mix of very high ceilings and open space. In winter, the room is usually very chilly, and in summer, sweltering after we start watching movies or using any of the tech we love in the living room. Add two 80 pound dogs, and you can quickly end up with a very toasty room.

With the Honeywell MN4CFSWW9 Classic Portable Air Conditioner, we can cool off the area we need in our living room within five to ten minutes. This makes the room feel so much better in summer, and we don’t have to worry about lowering the temperature in the rest of the house. The girls especially love it when they come in from a hard play session outside since it means they can quickly cool off and relax.

Our office is the other room where we use a portable air conditioner unit. We were quite surprised when we were told this is a common problem in offices and gaming rooms, and it went from bad to worse when we bought new video cards. To our surprise, they could overheat the room almost on their own during the winter, which sometimes led to us needing to put the portable A/C unit in the window during winter just so our computers didn’t overheat. When our household HVAC system was installed, they told us this was the preferred option since it would keep our main unit from overworking and causing damage to itself, a common issue in the south. At this point, I couldn’t imagine going without since it removed the hotspots in our home and LOWERED our electric bill in both summer and winter.

Our Preferred Portable Air Conditioner

Looking for a unit that can efficiently cool up to 700 square feet of space? In our household, we love Honeywell MN4CFSWW9 Classic Portable Air Conditioner. This 3-in-1 cooling system is designed for comfort and convenience, with digital controls that work with even the softest touch, and it is super quiet. At max speed, it is about as loud as moderate rainfall. While this may seem loud, it is more like gentle white noise, enough so that our dogs feel comfortable sleeping right next to the unit. Our biggest problem is that they want to stay near it as cool as possible. For times like this, the included remote control is amazing since it allows me to turn off the unit when I’m cool enough (or too cool, even!) on the other side of the room without waking up Ivi or Rylie.

Along with being quiet and very efficient at cooling, the Honeywell MN4CFSWW9 Classic Portable Air Conditioner is also very easy to install. The unit has everything you need to slide right into a window and is far easier to get in place than a traditional window unit. Just slip the adapter in the window with the hose, and you are ready to go! When you no longer want an A/C unit in your window, you easily pop everything out of the window and roll the entire unit out of the way. We store ours in the closet during the winter. With its sleek design and easy maintenance, this portable air conditioner is perfect for anyone who needs quick cooling in their home!
