Are there any dessert recipes your family asked for every holiday? In mine, it is tiramisu. Honestly, it seems to be the dessert most requested if anyone is even visiting, especially my mother in law. After trying it in a little mom and pop Greek restaurant at home, I wanted badly to try making it at home. In all honesty, my first attempts were horrible. It took a couple of years until I found a recipe that seemed like it might work, and from there, modifying it to my family’s liking. It wasn’t until I presented my new recipe to my in-laws for the first time, nearly a decade ago, that I knew I had finally found the perfect tiramisu recipe.
One of the things I had learned about tiramisu on my quest for the perfect recipe is that everyone has their own opinion of how this classic dessert should taste and look. I have found that many Italian restaurants focus heavily on ladyfingers with very little cream, while many of the Greek restaurants I have visited seem to view it more as a layered dessert with lots of cream (similar to my recipe). Actually, the times I have tried making it without the thick creamy layers I had some very sad family – I mean, who doesn’t like the idea of rich creamy cheese layers between espresso soaked ladyfingers and chocolate? It is easy to see why this is a winning recipe in my family.
Really, the only change I have made over the past ten years to the recipe is to make it safe for my father in law, who has a corn allergy. Since ladyfingers typically have some corn products, I usually use angel food cake instead of ladyfingers (it is a yummy, easy substitute too if you can’t find ladyfingers!). As well, I also found it does best in a trifle dish (which also makes it look very fancy at family gatherings).
Since some of you asked about my recipe when I talked about it on social media awhile back, I decided it was finally time to share this delightful recipe with all of you. Years ago, I actually shared this recipe as well as a guest post on another blog, but since the blogger quit blogging and deleted her blog, I thought it was time to share it with everyone again. Best of all, this tiramisu recipe is super easy to make, with the hardest thing actually being the time to build the layers. If you have never made tiramisu, I highly recommend trying this recipe. If your family is anything like mine, this Tiramisu recipe will be a hit!
- 4 Containers of Marscarpone Cheese
- 10 Eggs (room temperature)
- 1 Cup of Sugar
- 3 Packages of Ladyfingers (or 1 Large Angel Food Cake)
- 1 Cup of Espresso
- 1 Tablespoon of Sugar
- ½ Cup Kalhua
- Baking Cocoa Powder
- Separate the eggs into 2 bowls - one with eggs whites and one with yolks.
- In a large mixing bowl, beat the marscarpone cheese, cup of sugar and egg yolks until softened and fluffy. Set aside.
- In a separate bowl, beat the egg whites until they form fluffy, stiff peaks.
- Gently fold the egg whites into the marscarpone mixture. Make sure they are thoroughly mixed and blended before moving to the next step.
- Mix together the Espresso, tablespoon of sugar, and Kalhua.
- Place a layer of ladyfingers or angel food cake at the bottom of your dish. With a spoon, start soaking the lady fingers with the coffee mixture.
- Once they seemed soaked, put a layer of cheese on the lady fingers.
- Sprinkle the cheese layer with cocoa powder.
- Repeat steps 6 - 9 until you reach the top of your dish with the cheese layer. Refrigerate for 4 - 6 hours before serving.
