Honest Kitchen Halcyon Dog Food Review & Giveaway

August 21, 2014 by Susan Bewley

Disclosure: I received these products for free to review. The opinions in my review are honest and my own.

As many of you know, I am a big fan of the Honest Kitchen’s dehydrated dog food. It isn’t often that you find dog food that isn’t just healthy and made from all natural ingredients, but ingredients that are all HUMAN GRADE. While Reya is sometimes not very picky about what she eats, she absolutely loves their food. Every time she sees the box come out she does a cute little dance that includes wooing and lots of hops up on her rear legs. To her, this food is like getting those rare table scraps that grandma always sneaks her. Being such huge fans of their food, I was excited when they asked me to review the newest food in their collection – Halcyon, their duck protein dehydrated food. Once the box came, we knew we had to immediately try it with Reya!

Honest Kitchen Halcyon Dog Food: What is It?

Looking for a food to make your dog feel truly spoiled? If so, we think you will Honest Kitchen’s new Halcyon dog food. This dehydrated whole grain food includes cage-free duck meat. Like all their foods, it is made of only human grade ingredients, to meet all AAFCO requirements for a balanced adult dog diet. Since duck is a novel protein, it makes it great for dogs who are sensitive to both chicken and beef. With exceptional nutritious grains like buckwheat and chai, you will find that your dog is not only healthy, but loving their brand new food. For those who have never tried Honest Kitchen, make sure to check out our previous Honest Kitchen reviews for their other flavors!

Honest Kitchen Halcyon Dog Food: Overall

I will be the first to admit, our dog goes crazy when she sees the Honest Kitchen box come out. When she saw us open the new box, however, there was more curiosity than usual. She could smell that it was new, and her nose was in the air begging. Once we added water to the food as directed, she was in her eating area and waiting patiently for Dad to bring her food. Not only did she love this food, she completely cleaned the dish (who needs dishwashers?). So far, this food has been a big success and Reya absolutely loves it! Based on our own experience with the food, we are happy to give the Honest Kitchen’s new Halcyon Dog food an A+ rating!

No mention of price per lb, a major concern of mine. On the good side, having this around for emergencies, ie. hurricane would be great. I’d keep some in their doggie backpacks I’d like to have in case we ever had to evacuate.

Katt, their food varies in price due to the ingredients and protein. As stated in the review, it is $59.99 for a 4lb box, which makes 8lb of food. Like most natural, whole grain foods you don’t have to feed as much to your dog as you would kibble since it has more nutrients your dog needs. It is much more cost effective for small to medium dogs. With my mother’s Yorkie, for example, a 4lb box lasts 5 weeks. For my 75 lb highly active malamute a 4lb box only lasts about a week. It’s a lot like humans, natural whole grain food fills up more than junk food 😉

I have five dogs and three cats – all rescues. Since several of them got off to rough starts in life, I’m especially interested in giving them the healthiest food I can. It seems I’m reading new things every day about what is and isn’t good for my furbabies. I’ve heard good things about the Honest Kitchen and my dogs and cats loved the samples I received.

It sounds very healthy, and would be convenient of taking smaller space. But I feel the price of it is still too high for people that are very low income.
