Master Lock 2120DWD Laptop Lock Review

April 15, 2014 by Susan Bewley

Disclosure: I received these products for free to review. The opinions in my review are honest and my own.

If there is one thing all of us can agree on it is that tax day sucks. Nothing to me is more frustrating than doing taxes, especially with all the confusing laws and odd questions that the tax software always seems to ask. The worst part of me is keeping up with all the papers. I try filing my papers, but I always seem to have problems keeping up with everything. For example, my husband and I had a panic attack when we lost our 2011 taxes, due to a hard drive failure just a couple days after sending them off in 2011.  Not only did this keep us from doing our 2012 taxes until we got what we needed from the government, but cost us a hefty convenience fee. To say the least, we have started keeping copies in multiple places. Recently, I learned that Master Lock has been trying to make things easier for people like me by offering a free program called Master Lock Vault.

Here is how Master Lock Vault works. This online program allows you to store and organize lock combinations, digital copies of your passport, social security card, or just about any other type of confidential information you could imagine. The program is pretty much a digital online safe or deposit box, allowing you to access your information securely anytime, anywhere. Best of all, you can access year round via their website or their free mobile app that works on Android, Apple, Kindle, and Nook devices! Not only am I planning on signing up for Master Lock, but I have also been looking for ways that I can keep my laptop a bit more secure, especially with how much we travel. Luckily, Master Lock wanted to make this a bit easier for me, by allowing me to review their Master Lock 2120DWD Laptop Lock!

Master Lock 2120DWD Laptop Lock: What is It

Want to protect your laptop on the go? Make keeping your laptop in one place on campus, in the office, or while traveling with the Master Lock 2120DWD Laptop Lock. This durable, metal constructed lock is made from strong, self coiling cable, and extends from 3 inches to 6 feet, allowing you to fit use it just about anywhere. With its ergonomical dial and trusted locking mechanism, you can keep stuff even safer. Unlike other locks on the market, it doesn’t use number combinations, but letters (over 10,000 possible combinations!), making it unlikely anyone would quickly figure out your combination. This lock is great for securing laptops, monitors, or projectors with a built in lock slot.

Master Lock 2120DWD Laptop Lock: Overall

Personally, I was very impressed with this lock. It is very easy to use, well made, but not very easy when it comes to resetting the lock, especially when it is in use. I could easily see using this lock next time we travel. Best of all, it is long enough that I can lock it in somewhere and still use the laptop, something that hasn’t been the case with some other laptop locks I have seen previously. Based on my own experience with this lock, I am happy to give the Master Lock 2120DWD Laptop Lock an A rating.

I definitely like that the lock is durable with a locking mechanism that enables me to lock my laptop while at the same time still use it. The fact that it uses letter combinations instead of numbers is a plus too.

I like most that the Master Lock 2120DWD Laptop Lock does not require a key to lock and unlock. I tend to misplace keys but I will remember a password.

I love the security you get when you using the laptop in public. The strong steel cable is a sure way of deterring someone to even attempt to steal it.

I never thought to buy one of these, but I use my laptop daily and take it everywhere with me so it is worth thinking about.

I never thought I would need it either but with how much we travel and I love working on the go, I thought it was time to finally get one. Nothing is more annoying than working in Panera and freaking out someone may take your laptop while you refill your coffee!

I like that the combination is a word instead of a series of numbers. It is a unique security feature and more difficult to crack.

    Thanks 🙂

  15. Rick McClenthen says

I like that the Master Lock 2120DWD Laptop Lock uses letters instead of numbers for the combination. This makes it so much more secure. As a child, I remember using similar combination locks with just 0-9 for the combination. Althought it took a little time, I was always able to figure out the combinations due the the limited possible combination. With 10,000 possible combinations, it take too much time for a thief to attempt to try all combinations, and they would just move on.

      April 21, 2014 at 11:29 pm

Same here on the locks. This is a much more secure options 🙂

I like that it can work with any laptop/netbook etc. It’s also very convinient that strong ultra portable self coiling cable extends from 3 inches (76.2mm) to 6 feet

I love that it uses letters/a word for the combination. Much easier to remember for me than numbers. I also like how easy it is to use and travel with.

I like the idea of being able to lock my laptop.. I had no idea that this existed!! I love it.

  20. Enrique Herrera says

    April 24, 2014 at 2:56 pm

I love the fact the the concept is so ingenious, but cracking the code is even harder for someone to guess! I would find it more soothing to have my laptop safe then rather than to just leave it sitting by my desk saying, “Please take me, I’m venerable.”

  21. Donna Pyszk says

    April 25, 2014 at 5:42 am

I love how the combination is a word

  22. Janice Crespo says

    April 25, 2014 at 9:13 am

I like that I can secure my information digitally (I truly am going all digitally). I also use my laptop so often that if someone stole it, I would be up the proverbial creek without a paddle – lol – so this ensures if someone does ever break in (heaven forbid) at least the laptop wouldn’t be as appealing all locked up 🙂

  23. Serge B says

    April 26, 2014 at 6:49 am

I liked the length as well as the letter combinations. I always find these easier than numbers to remember.

  24. Stephen Saunders says

    April 26, 2014 at 2:19 pm

I like the peace of mind that something like this would bring. I use a cable style lock to secure my mom’s push mower to a support beam at her house. Maybe no one would ever try to take it anyway, but it’s good to have the peace of mind that you have some security there.

I like the ultra portable self coiling cable and the ergonomic dial spacing. With my eyes, its also nic eto have high contrast numbers are easy to read with red viewing window for easy viewing & resetting
